Status of EIA Development in the Mediterranean Region :

Reality and Prospects

    Based on the results of actual assessment of EIA systems in 14 countries in the south Mediterranean region, the paper describes the status of EIA development in respect to legal aspects, institutional capacity and implementation. A comparison with international best EIA practices is drawn with the purpose to identify the existing gaps to achieve compatibility with international funding agencies requirements.

The paper discusses the difficulties in achieving this and proposes approaches and actions to help enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of EIA in support of each country’s own environmental and development objectives.
