The environmental impact assessment of development projects and plans ,as the most significant means of management ,plays an essential role in achieving the sustainable development goals. The oil pipe lines, platforms and reservoirs projects ,designed for the country’ industrial  and economic growth and are of great important, are implemented for the welfare of human societies. These kind of projects , without doubt, have such negative environmental impacts as air, soil and water pollutions , and sometimes irreparable destructive impacts on the environment . Should the projects be assessed regarding the environmental considerations, not only will the negative impacts reduction be achieved , but their positive impacts will expedite the sustainable development.

Iran , at present  is taking essential measures to use the environmental assessment methods  for oil projects. In spite of the numerous difficulties in this case, it is hoped that the projects executors make their best effort to use these methods.

The article , at the outset , states a history of oil industry and environment  and after that explains general specifications of the oil projects. It , then , discusses the views, legal necessities and the dimensions of the environmental impacts assessment in short , and draws a picture of  their application.

In the end , the article ,while making necessary recommendations, clarifies  the essential policies. It is hoped that such a new subject can attract the attention needed for the oil industry development.
