Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening of the EIA in Iran

   Following years of environmental deterioration by man , it has now become apparent that development would not be realized unless planning is included. The main and essential means of  achieving the sustainable development is environmental impact assessment.

Despite the improvement of  Environmental Impact Assessment

( EIA) in the world , the need for protecting , strengthening , and expanding this knowledge is strongly felt in many countries including Iran , due to the administrative structures and scientific capacity. Therefore , in order to improve the present situation , the project of Capacity Building and Institutional Strengthening  of the EIA in Iran , in collaboration with UNDP and D.O.E  was put into operation in 1997.

This project aims at strengthening the meaning , perception , processes, procedure , training programs as well as laws and processes of decision making, and public involvement in EIA.

This article tries to discuss in short  the activities and measures as well as the expected results of the project .
